Robotic Process Automation (RPA) can be used to automate UI tasks and replace manual, repetitive tasks. As RPA-based implementations scale and more complex orchestrations are implemented in RPA scripts, such tasks quickly become error-prone and require more intensive maintenance. Camunda shows in a video how to modernize existing RPA implementations and eliminate such problems.
In our introductory blog article on Robotic Process Automation, we described the basic functionality of RPA. In doing so, we discussed advantages and disadvantages compared to API-based process automation approaches. Our conclusion was that one must carefully weigh the use of RPA, because even though it is tempting to be able to run automation functions without standardized APIs, it pays back with stability that is difficult to predict. Even inconspicuous updates to operating systems or applications can cause recorded transactions to fail. This results in regular and thus costly administration work, as well as quality and security issues and so-called “technical debts”, which become more of a problem the longer they exist.
But often you have or had no choice, or you inherit an existing RPA landscape. In this situation, two questions emerge:
- How to connect these point solutions with cross-company process automation?
- How can they be modernized and, if necessary, replaced step by step with up-to-date integrations based on stable APIs?
